Assistant Geotechnical Engineer (Site-Based, Contract)

About the role

We’re looking for an organised, hands-on Assistant Geotechnical Engineer to support construction-phase delivery across earthworks, foundations, slopes and retaining structures. You’ll gather high-quality site data, keep QA tight, and turn observations into clear notes—working closely with senior engineers, contractors and laboratories.

What you’ll do (site-led)

• QA & inspections: Assist with ITP checks, photograph and document works, complete checklists, and raise issues promptly.
• Earthworks & materials: Observe/record compaction testing (NDG, CBR/plate load), track moisture/acceptability, and compile daily summaries.
• Working platforms & access: Verify materials/thickness against design intent (e.g., BR470 principles) and maintain evidence packs.
• GI & verification: Help supervise trial pits/boreholes; manage sampling, logging, chain-of-custody and lab schedules.
• Instrumentation & monitoring: Take readings (e.g., VWPs, inclinometers, settlement plates), maintain dashboards, flag exceedances.
• Records & reporting: Produce concise site diaries, red-lines, photo logs and weekly memos; support NCR responses and close-out.
• Coordination: Liaise with the Principal Contractor, testing labs and suppliers; attend briefings/toolbox talks and capture actions.

What you’ll bring

• Degree in Civil/Geotechnical/Engineering Geology (or equivalent). 0–3 years’ experience (placements welcomed).
• Working knowledge of Eurocode 7 basics and UK site practice; eager to learn from senior staff.
• Confident with Excel/Word and tidy data management; basic CAD/GIS exposure a plus.
• Clear communicator; proactive, safety-minded and reliable on documentation.
• Tickets: CSCS (required); full UK driving licence. SSSTS/PTS/First Aid desirable but not essential.

Training & support

• On-the-job mentoring from senior geotechnical staff.
• Structured refreshers on EC7 fundamentals, site QA, and monitoring good practice.
• Access to standard calculation sheets/templates; supervised checks as experience grows.

Typical deliverables

• Daily/weekly site notes, ITP/QA evidence packs and action trackers.
• Materials and compaction summaries; lab schedules and results registers.
• Instrumentation reading sheets and simple trend plots.
• As-built photo logs and red-line mark-ups for handover.

Contract & logistics

• Duration: 6–12 months (extension possible).
• Pattern: Predominantly site-based (4–5 days/week); occasional nights/weekends as works demand.
• Commercials: Competitive day rate; IR35 status determined per assignment.
• Travel/PPE: UK-wide travel as required; PPE per policy; expenses per agreement.

Operate within strict client confidentiality at all times. Outputs must be NDA-compliant, evidence-based and suitable for independent audit.
